Summer, 27 CE: The Transfiguration

Matthew 17: 1-3

After six days, Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah talking with Jesus.

The painting shown here was the last work Raphael completed before his death in 1520. Some websites have indicated that the lower half of the painting show Jesus healing the demon-possessed boy on the following day. I’m more inclined to believe that the nine figures to the left are the disciples who are trying–and manifestly failing–to help the boy. What do you think? Leave a comment.
